Rockstar
Energy Suzuki pushed their way through another tough round at San Francisco on
Saturday. The high point of the night came when AMA Western Regional Lites-class
rider Hunter Hewitt took the holeshot in his qualifier, proving once again that
the Suzukis are holeshot machines this year. “After I took the holeshot in the
heat race, I was feeling really great,” commented Hunter, who went on to finish
fourth in his heat with his RM-Z250. The main event proved to be a difficult one
for Hunter, however, due in part to an entanglement with another rider during
the start. “I was feeling really good going into the main because of my heat
race, but my foot got caught in the bike next to me when the gate dropped for
the main. I managed to pull it loose and keep going, but racing in the pack is a
lot different than racing up front. I was racing tight, not like I was in the
qualifier, and it was really tough to get through the pack.” Looking ahead to
San Diego, Team Manager Bill Keefe issued a challenge to Hewitt. “We expected
better results from Hunter. He needs to work hard this week, race hard at San
Diego, and produce the results that both he and the team know he’s capable of,”
Keefe said.
In the Supercross class, rider Tommy Hahn has been consistently improving with each race. “Tommy is improving as we expected,” Keefe said after Hahn’s 9th-place finish in San Francisco. “We knew it would take about four rounds before he would be up to speed after his injuries in December. Going forward, we expect Tommy’s lap times and finishes to improve each week.” Tommy is currently running tenth in points, and is training hard in preparation for this week’s race in San Diego.
Also joining the training sessions this week will be Lites-class
rider Ryan Morais, who has been off his bike since suffering an injury during
his heat race at Anaheim 2. Ryan will be training this week and next week with
the team in preparation for his return to racing at the Anaheim 3 event on
February 13th.
